What to do When God Becomes the Third-Wheel

Have you ever struggled in your romantic relationships? Whether you’re dating someone or married, there are struggles that come along with it.

After presenting a survey to many young women, I found that one of their biggest struggles, regarding romance, is keeping God at the center of relationships.

The fact is, relationships can’t work the way God intended if we take Him out of the picture.

I love what Louie Giglio says, in his DVD series, “Boy Meets Girl”. He says, “Relationships succeed when an awareness of God and a connectivity to God are foremost in our thinking.”

Even though God is the author of relationships, keeping Him at the center seems to be one of the hardest parts.

What’s there to do when God becomes the third wheel?

There are 3 things that I’ve found to be of utmost importance when it comes to putting God first in relationships.

1. Pray Together

Matthew 18:20 “For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.”

Praying together is a vital part of any relationship. Taking time out, every day, to be open with each other and present your relationship before God will build up your relationships more than anything else!

When God is present among us, we are able to strengthen our character and let our relationship be firm in Christ.

2. Study the Bible With Each Other

Relationships automatically deepen when we open up the Word of God and study it with each other.

I encourage you to come up with a certain time where you and your boyfriend/husband can sit down and study the Bible together.

Make it fun! Maybe sit down to a yummy snack or hot chocolate and talk about what Christ is currently doing in your life. These special times make all the difference!

3. Be Open to Godly Counsel

God puts people in our lives for a reason. It’s important to reach out to the godly examples in your life and allow them to encourage and guide you through your relationship.

Have you ever looked at someone else’s relationship and noticed that something needs to change in order for it be better? We don’t always notice the weaknesses in our own relationships, but other people can help us identify and overcome them.

Surround yourself with godly people who can encourage you to keep God at the center of your relationship.

These 3 strategies will strengthen your relationship, whether you’re married or dating someone!

Our focus can often stray from Christ, but when we intentionally make time to build relationships on the foundation of Christ, He can make our relationship something beautiful!

What do you think?

How have you been able to keep God at the center of your relationship?

Has God become a third wheel in your relationship? What changes can you make today to put God first?

Hey Girls! It’s such a blessing that we can encourage you in your walk with Christ, however, we are not licensed counselors and cannot offer professional advice. If you are seeking help and counsel, we strongly encourage you to talk to a trusted adult such as your parents, a godly woman, or a pastor. They can better guide you, as they are able to know the details of your situation.
