Self-Worth: What They’re Not Telling You

There comes a time when we all wonder who we are, why we’re here, and what we’re worth.

Whether it’s been through the struggle of becoming flawless, being looked-down upon by the people around you, or suffering from abuse; we’ve all been wondering the same thing. What am I worth?

The concept of being valued isn’t the problem; it’s where we find our value.

We turn to things that only bring temporary satisfaction in hopes that one day we can stop searching. We’re told that beauty on the outside doesn’t matter; it’s what’s on the inside that counts.

Yet everywhere we go, people are trying to sell us things that promote just the opposite. Magazines are filled with ads telling you that if you buy this or that, you will become prettier and guys will notice you.

What they don’t tell us is that make-up, weight-loss diets, and attention from guys will only make us happy for a short time. Sadly, lots of women still buy into the lies, hoping that maybe this time they will work.

Being Skinny

The list goes on and on. We turn to these things multiple times, yet we never gain what we’ve been searching for; someone to love us unconditionally.

There are so many girls out there who feel like the only thing they have to offer is their body. You may even be one of them. They have been used, abused, and tossed to the side feeling alone and worthless.

Women all over the world feel like they have to fit the mold of the “perfect woman” in order to be noticed, struggling day to day trying to look prettier, skinnier, and free of flaws.

I have some news for all you struggling girls and women out there.

Jesus Christ is the only source for real value.

You don’t even have to think that hard to see that terms like ‘self-worth’ and ‘self-esteem’ are pretty self-centered. This culture has tried to figure out many different ways on how we can make ourselves happy and content when the only reason we have worth is because of Jesus.

In order to even somewhat grasp God’s definition of you, you must first know and believe the definition of God.

1 John 4:16 says that God is love. Can you even wrap your mind around that? The very definition of God is love and it’s because of that love that he watches out for us and gives us value.

So, what are you worth, according to God?

1. You are beautiful.

Ecclesiastes 3:11 says, “He {God} has made everything beautiful is His timing…”

Psalm 139:14 says, “I praise you for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.”

God created you! He made you unique and special. Regardless of what others may tell you, you are beautiful because you are a daughter of the King, Jesus Christ.

1 Peter 3:3-5 says, “Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewelry and fine clothes. Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight. For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to make themselves beautiful.”

God made us beautiful, not so that we can flaunt our bodies and show-off our looks, but so that we can point others to Him by reflecting, in a godly manner, the beauty that He has given us.

2. You are valuable

Luke 12:7 says, “ But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.”

Isaiah 49:16 says, “See, I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands; Your walls are continually before Me.”

You are so valuable to God that He knows the exact number of hairs on your head. Your name is written on His hand. Just as he cares for the birds, He cares so much more for you!

Jeremiah 29:11 says, “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.”

I can’t even comprehend the fact that the King of the universe; the One who created me, thinks about me! He has a plan for your life, just as He does mine.

Satan will try to tell us that, if we want to be noticed and valued, we have to do whatever we can, even if it’s harmful, to get the attention we crave.

Yet God tells us that, if we want to be noticed and valued, all we have to do is turn to Him. He is absolutely amazing!

3 You have been redeemed.

Ephesians 2:8-10 says, “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.”

We’ve all made mistakes. Maybe you’ve been feeling like you’ve gone way too far; like there’s no way to start over. Well, Ephesians 2:8 says that we have been saved through grace.

Jesus doesn’t have to forgive us. After all, we have failed Him over and over again. The good news is that He still does! You don’t have to live in shame anymore because God is offering a free gift of grace. He offers us a chance to start over and strive to live for Him.

In order for us to realize how awesome God really is, we have to take our eyes off of ourselves and turn them to Jesus.

It’s only when we realize how unworthy we are to be valued by God that we will truly find true joy in living for Him.

So, still wondering what you’re worth?

You are a child of God, the King above all kings. You are loved and cherished by Someone so much greater than anyone of us could ever be.

The beauty of life is knowing that Jesus Christ, our perfect God, has taken you, an imperfect sinner, and has given you a reason to live a life full of worth and satisfaction.

What are your thoughts?

  1. How has God taken the lies of this world and turned them into something beautiful for your life?
  2. Are you willing to stand up against the crowd and take on a new purpose in Jesus Christ for your life?
