“The grass withers, the flower fades, but the Word of our God stands forever.” Isaiah 40:8
When was the last time you spent time with Christ?
Let me rephrase that.
When was the last time you had an amazing, powerful, life-changing time with Christ?
See the difference? I can tell you about countless times I’ve prayed and read my Bible without taking it in. I can tell you how I’ve rushed through a short devotional because I had other things to do.
I’ve been craving more than just a luke-warm prayer and a few Bible verses. And, from what I’ve seen and heard, so have you.
It’s only natural to assume that spending time with the very King of the Universe should be more than simply sitting there and reading for an hour. It should be alive and real.
As I’ve been changing up my devotional times, they’ve become more alive and effective than they were.
Here’s how I’ve learned to have an amazing quiet time with Christ.
1. Gather Your Own Faith Journey Kit
I’ve been going through the book, “What Happens When Young Women Say Yes to God” by Lysa and Hope TerKeurst.
One of the assignments it had me do was gather together some things to use as I read the book. I loved the idea and was quick to complete the task.
At first, I was only planning to use my little kit to accompany the book, but I changed my mind and decided that I would use it for my faith journey.
In a later article I will go into further detail on making your own ‘faith journey’ kit, so for now we’ll just cover what’s inside.
You can add anything you’d like to your own kit, but here are the essentials.
A Prayer List
Encouraging Quotes, Lyrics to Worship Songs, or Inspiring Letters.
Go ahead and get these items together into a small bag or Bible case. It’s important to be ready to record what God is teaching you.
2. Find a Quiet Place
Imagine you and a friend meet to catch up over hot chocolate and muffins. You’ve been looking forward to this day for weeks and can’t wait to finally spend some 1-on-1 time with her.
As you begin talking, you notice that she’s checked her phone at least 5 times already. It looks as though she’s trying to pay attention, but you don’t think she’s really listening.
How would you feel?
I’d be pretty annoyed. After all, I took time out of my day to meet my friend because I was really looking forward to talking and catching up.
This is similar to our time with God. When we decide to take time to spend with Him, He really looks forward to it. He has all kinds of things planned; things He can’t wait to reveal to us through the Bible and the Holy Spirit.
However, when we bring along distractions, we can’t give God our full attention. Instead, we’re like that girl checking her phone every minute when her friend is trying to talk to her.
Now, I don’t think God gets annoyed at us, but I believe that He is hurt when we let ourselves get distracted when He wants to spend time with us.
Find a nice, quiet place where you can give your full attention to the Lord. If you can help it, don’t bring along things that will distract you.
This will be your special spot where you can meet with God and spend time with Him.
3. Invite the Holy Spirit
Romans 8:14 “For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.”
When Jesus went to Heaven to prepare our home, He sent the Holy Spirit to live inside of us to instruct, inspire, and comfort us.
All we have to do is pray and ask the Holy Spirit to come and guide us.
The Lord wants us to take in what we read about Him. He wants us to be able to really learn how to live as Christians. That’s why the Holy Spirit is here to help and instruct us.
4. Open Your Heart and Study
Now, it’s time to take out your Faith Journey Kit! It doesn’t matter which order you choose to do things in. If you’re going to read your Bible first, pick out either a story, a chapter, or a topic to focus on. Then, start reading!
Note what stands out to you and how you can apply what you’re learning to your life.
Keep your journal handy because you’ll want to write down what you think about what you’ve read, how you’ve seen God work in your life, or the things you need His help with.
Your prayer notebook is to write down your prayer requests. Leave room to write down how God answers them!
Take time to talk with God, through prayer. You can tell Him anything from what you’re thankful for, to what you need help with, to what’s going on in your everyday life. He cares about what you have to say and wants to hear from you.
Be sure to sit still a little while to think about what you’re learning and how to apply it to your life. If you feel the Holy Spirit leading you to do something, listen and follow Him.
These 4 steps have made my quiet times with God truly powerful.
When you open your heart up to the Lord and take special time to spend one-on-one with Him, there’s no telling what amazing things will happen!
Hey Girls! It’s such a blessing that we can encourage you in your walk with Christ, however, we are not licensed counselors and cannot offer professional advice.
