In a society where porn is normal, masturbation is healthy, and casual sex is expected, the need for God-defined sexuality is bigger than ever.
We have questions.
If porn is a men’s problem, why am I struggling?
Is casual sex really that big of a deal?
How do I deal with same-sex attraction?
Why did God create me with sexual desires if I can’t control them?
And, frankly, if the church doesn’t answer them, society will.
In their newly released book, Sex, Purity, and the Longings of a Girl’s Heart, Kristen Clark and Bethany Beal don’t shy away from today’s hot topics. In fact, they open up about their own struggles, creating a safe place to talk about sexuality.
Transparent and Honest
As I read this book, I admired the way that Kristen and Bethany wrote openly about their past struggles.
Throughout the entire book, these two women share stories from their pasts, along with biblical examples of what God-defined sexuality looks like. Because they are transparent about their own mistakes, the feel of the book is loving, understanding, and relatable.
Addresses the Hush-Hush Questions
Sexuality is a hot button topic in today’s’ society. The sad part about it is, while society openly tells us to do whatever feels good, the church has become overwhelmingly quiet on the subject.
Sex, Purity, and the Longings of a Girl’s Heart takes a stand and answers, what Kristen and Bethany call, the hush-hush questions.
These are the questions regarding issues such as porn, erotica, masturbation, casual sex, and gender identity.
Instead of shying away, they take these concerns head-on and turn to God’s Word for the answers.
Biblical and Eye-Opening
Just as we should do with any book, it’s always best to compare what we read with what Scripture says. No book (other than the Bible) is 100% truth. That’s why grounding ourselves on God’s Word is key when it comes to deciphering between truth and deception.
That being said, this book does a great job at turning to Scripture for answers. Kristen and Bethany not only pull out many amazing examples of God-defined sexuality, but also look at marriage and sex compared to God’s intimate relationship with the Church.
They start at the beginning and take us through God’s amazing design for sexuality and purity.
Getting the most out of Sex, Purity, and the Longings of a Girl’s Heart
In their other books, Kristen and Bethany provide a study guide at the end of each chapter (along with lines to answer and journal about the questions). In this book, however, the study questions are located at the end of the book.
Personally, I enjoyed having the study guide at the end of each chapter better than the current set-up. In order to get the most out of the chapters, I encourage you to grab a journal to write your answers and thoughts in.
Overall, I loved reading Sex, Purity, and the Longings of a Girl’s Heart!

*Because this book addresses many sensitive issues regarding sexuality and abuse, it is recommended for girls ages 12 and up. However, many girls are exposed to more than people realize at an age even younger than this. For this reason, I recommended looking at maturity and experience to decide if this book is a good choice for a younger girl.
